Entering the second week of the new year, many people may have been deterred from making a New Year’s resolution. You hear it all the time, “it’s pointless for you to make one because you won’t even keep up with it”. But, what if you can?

Making a resolution, and sticking with it, doesn’t have to be hard. Here are 5 easy tips to crush your resolutions and have the best year that 2022 has to offer. 

Make it realistic

Oftentimes, people set their goals according to other people. They look at what their friends and family plan to do, and they believe that it’s a copy and paste thing. Your New Year’s resolution should be catered to you.

Understand that life, family, work, and other outside factors can have an impact on the outcome. It is important to set goals that challenge you but are still realistic. If one of your resolutions is to meet new people, take into consideration your work and personal schedule. Set days that you want to network and interact with others. 

Making your resolution realistic will prevent burnout.

Don’t repeat old routines

Some people may have the same New Year’s resolution every year. Sometimes, they are achieved. Other times, you failed before the midway point. If you’re one of those people who just can’t seem to get it right, try doing something different. 

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Figure out a new routine to help you conquer it. Let’s say your New Year’s resolution is to be more active. You have a past of hating the gym and you find yourself only going for the first two weeks. This is the perfect opportunity to try a different routine. Group workout classes can be a fun alternative to lifting weights by yourself. 

Get a support partner

This tip is probably the least talked about, but very important. You can only motivate yourself so much. Sometimes, you need an extra push to get things going. Getting a support partner can encourage you to not give up on your goals for the year. 

It helps best when your support partner is just as serious about their resolution as you are. Discuss your goals or things you want to eliminate in the new year with each other. You can collectively think of ways to conquer them.

Your support partner should also serve as your accountability partner. Whenever you see each other falling off, you should be able to put each other back on track. 

Track your progress

Tracking progress is so beneficial when you want to conquer a New Year’s resolution. Take note of where you were at the beginning of the year. As time goes on, the effort you put into your resolutions will be measurable. 

When you see progress, even if it’s just a little, it encourages you to keep going. Take before pictures of your fitness journey. Take a video of yourself from when you first started learning how to skate. As time goes on, you will be able to measure your progress.

Remember, progress is progress. 

Reward yourself for your wins

Don’t make life all about hard work and no play. Enjoying and celebrating your achievements makes the process more fun. This will also help you to look forward to more rewards. When your dog finally does that trick you’ve been trying to get them to do, you give them a treat to reward them. That treat motivates them to consistently do it. Humans need this kind of reward as well.

Rewarding yourself for sticking to your New Year’s resolutions not only encourages you for the current year but puts you in the direction to conquer the following year as well.
