A good business owner needs to master a number of different skills. They need to be an effective leader, they need to be good with money, and they need to have good critical thinking skills. But have you considered the importance of creativity?
People tend to think of good business leaders as very practical people and they don’t think that creativity is that important in business, but that isn’t the case at all. In fact, creativity is central to business success and if you are not capable of creative thinking, you will struggle. These are some of the most common business situations where creativity is important.
Designing New Products
A business is nothing without an amazing product to sell. Most companies start when somebody has a great idea that they’re excited about, but after that initial success, you need to start coming up with new product ideas. The product design process requires a combination of skills, but creativity is one of the most important. You need to do your research to work out where the gaps in the market are, but then the creativity comes into play. Unless you are able to think outside the box and come up with something that nobody else is doing. Unless you are capable of being creative, you won’t be able to separate yourself from the competition.
Motivating employees is one of your most important tasks as a leader. There are many different ways to deal with employees that lack motivation, but it’s often the creative methods that work most effectively. Although there are many research-based methods for motivating your team, you shouldn’t stick rigidly to the strategies that work for other people. Every business is different and sometimes, you have to think outside the box to create new ways of working.
Creating Marketing Campaigns
When creating a marketing campaign, creativity is essential. Consumers are exposed to so many businesses on a daily basis and we are all desensitized to marketing to some extent. If you see a dull marketing campaign, you’ll ignore it and forget it within seconds. It’s only the creative campaigns that do something we’ve never seen before that really stick in our minds. The problem is, we quickly get used to things and crave something new, so constant creativity is a must. Take flash mobs, for example. For a few months, they were an exciting new way of making a statement and building a brand. But these days, they’re old news and a business that uses them as part of a marketing campaign will be seen as outdated and out of touch.
Although it’s important that you do research and take a data driven approach to marketing, it’s equally important that you inject creativity into everything you do.
Being a business owner is one of the hardest jobs there is because you need to master so many skills. If you run a business of your own, make sure that you don’t underestimate the importance of your creative skills.
