A robust company backbone depends on three factors: us, the business owner; our customers; and our employees. While you’re out trying to take care of all the nitty-gritty details associated with running a business, it’s often your employees that are left in charge of navigating the ship through smooth waters. If you have an established hiring process, then you’re going to have a team of excellent workers who won’t just not give you trouble, but actively help to take your business to the next level. Alas, things don’t always work out that way. From time to time, you’ll have an employee that gives you plenty of headaches. Learn How To Give Feedback

There’s no point moaning about a poor-performing or misbehaving employee behind their back. Everyone is different, and what you see as obviously bad behavior might, to them, seem completely natural. If you want them to improve but are staying silent, then you’re going to be waiting for a long time! Instead, make sure you’re giving them feedback. They might be remarkably receptive to your constructive criticism – but you won’t know for sure until you speak with them.

Record the Incidences

Of course, while you can hope for the best, there’ll be times when your chat won’t quite go as smoothly as you hoped. Things may not improve. If that happens, it’s important that you keep a record of every unprofessional thing that they do; if it comes to termination, and they accuse you of wrongful dismissal, you’ll have a long list of examples to show that you were, in fact, taking the right course of action.

Work With the Employee

But let’s never get ahead of ourselves. Your employee might not turn out to be the star worker that you hoped they would be, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t turn out to be a solid worker in the future. Unless you’re hiring for vastly experienced positions, it’s wrong just to let your workers get on with things. Your job as the owner is to train and bring the best out of your employees. If you see a glimmer of potential behind the laziness, then work with them to bring them up to speed.

When Things Get Serious

Some employees are just never destined to work out, and you might end up in a legal tangle with your worker, especially if they’re in breach of their contract.
