The Essential Guide To Monetizing Your Blog

Okay, so I’m going to answer a big question I get asked here all the time. How do I make money from my blog? It’s the holy grail for bloggers. They want to turn their thoughts and content into a viable passive income. Is it possible? You bet it is! Monetizing a blog isn’t easy, but there are plenty of people making a healthy living from it.

Before we start, I must point out that your blog needs traffic, and plenty of it. As with any business, you can’t monetize without customers and leads. Every suggestion here requires a regular flow of traffic to your blog. So, your first task is to build up a readership and following. (Hint, I’ve got plenty of resources to help you do that, check them out!)

Advertising is the tried-and-tested route of monetization. It’s becoming less common, simply because it’s no longer the money-maker it once was. But, I’m including it because it does work, if you have a big enough audience. The premise is simple. You host adverts on your website, and you get paid every time someone clicks on them. The best place to start is Google AdSense; they’ll get you up and running with a few relevant adverts. You’ll get a small trickle of income to start with, but it will eventually grow.

Create a magazine

If you’ve built up a wealth of content over the years, why not turn the best bits into a magazine? (Check out to see how you can make one yourself.) You could even commit to publishing one every month. This gives you a strong product with lots of monetisation options. First of all, you could sell advertising at a premium within the magazine. Secondly, you could charge a small price for it. After all, it’s a premium product.

Sell a product or coaching

The most lucrative blogs always have a product or service available on site. It’s the best way to get those large chunks of income you’re looking for. If you’re running a blog, you’re probably an expert on something. Whether it’s marketing or parenting, why not offer more detailed coaching and learning resources? You can create tutorial videos or eBooks. You can host webinars or offer direct calls to customers. If you run a niche blog about – let’s say – horse-riding, you can sell horse-riding products directly. After all, you’ve already got the perfect target audience.

Affiliate sales

Another common way to make money is through affiliate sales. In fact, it’s one of the best forms of monetization for bloggers. It involves recommending products and services to your readers. You get a commission every time they follow through. Amazon has the biggest affiliate scheme, so start there. Once approved, you can link to Amazon products from your blog. The site will track your readers that click through, and you’ll get a cut of everything they buy. For more information on affiliate sales, follow this link:

If you’re looking to make money from your blog, you’ll need to get creative! Think outside the box, and start thinking like a business. It’s not easy, but it’s certainly possible. Good luck!
