Now, salaries and benefits can be an enormous problem for small businesses when it comes to hiring – and keeping – the very best staff. You don’t have the powerful budgets that larger companies have, and there’s also a good chance that you can’t meet their benefits packages. However, you do have other options. First of all, you can offer stakes in your business. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but it will help your employees feel like they have more ownership – far more than they would in a corporate company.
Also, you can offer them a better quality of life. Perhaps you could provide them flexible working, or let them work from home from time to time. If you can work out when the least busy periods of the year occur, then maybe you could offer them an extra holiday. Every member of your team can benefit from training opportunities. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the cleaner learning a new health and safety program, or a line manager receiving consultant training to better themselves. People want to learn new things and progress.
All employees want to know if their jobs will help them improve themselves If you can’t afford to offer that in wages, then why not provide training instead? The more staff members that enhance their skills, the better your business will run. There is a chance that they will use those new skills to get a better-paid job, of course. But many will stay, and it will help you reduce the costs of retraining for empty positions.
