Collecting Email Addresses In Retail And Web-Based Environments

Whether you have a retail business with a brick-and-mortar store, or web-based or blog business, one of the easiest ways to collect email addresses for future promotions and advertising is by holding a drawing. Just about anyone will give up their email address for the chance to win something. Wouldn’t you? Here are some simple steps to gather lots of email address in either business format.

Retail Drawings to Collect Email Addresses

Putting on an event and conducting a drawing in your retail store is a great way to get a list of email addresses to market to. Not all businesses have websites, but everyone has access to email. This is a great in-person way to market your business.

Step 1: Hold an event. Any reason to hold an event is a good reason. Be sure to market the event well with a good call to action. No one will come if they don’t have a good reason to. Invite the local chamber of commerce, neighboring businesses, and offer something customers would want to come in for. Some ideas include: a free door prize for the first 20 customers to come to the event, having a local vendor come and barbeque for everyone who attends (free to the customers), have the local radio station be at the event promoting, conduct a cross-promotional event with other businesses in the same shopping center, etc.

Step 2: Find several drawing prizes ready to promote for the drawing. Talk to your vendors to see what they would be willing to donate for your event / drawing. Having one grand prize and several smaller prizes draws in more of a crowd. Promote these prizes, especially the grand prize, during the event.

Step 3: Ask everyone for their business card to put into the drawing, and ensure everyone knows that they don’t have to be present to win. Have a pad of blank entry forms ready for anyone who doesn’t have their business card on them. Get them excited about the grand prize and ensure them that they will be notified if they are the winner.

Step 4: Hold the drawing the day after the event. You want to be able to call your customers back into your store after the event so you have an additional opportunity to sell to them again.

Step 5: Promptly call your winners and let them know they’ve won a prize and to please come back into the store to pick up their prize.

Now you have email addresses for everyone who came into your store during your event. Be sure to give every person you email with a promotion the ability to opt out of your email list. The only thing worse than receiving unwanted promotional emails is to not be able to opt out of them.

Web-Based or Blog Business Drawings to Collect Email Addresses

If you have a web-based business, or a blog, there’s an easy way to grow your email list doing something similar.

Step 1: Collect several prizes. Talk to vendors, local businesses, or friends to find several prizes that your customers or blog readers would be interested in winning.

Step 2: Select a drawing date and promote the drawing everywhere. Put advertisements for the drawing on your website (including T&C, deadline to enter, number of entries allowed, when and how winners will be announced, etc.), on your social media sites, and anytime you touch anyone online. Be sure you have a way for customers to enter the drawing. A simple drawing entry form on your website is easiest. Collecting a customer’s name and email address should be enough.

Step 3: Hold the drawing on the date you said you would, and announce / notify winners how you said you would.

Now you have email addresses for everyone who came into your store during your event. Be sure to give every person you email with a promotion the ability to opt out of your email list. The only thing worse than receiving unwanted promotional emails is to not be able to opt out of them.
