I am proud to announce that my 8 year old daughter chose to have her hair cut and donated to Locks of Love! She’s been growing it out for quite some time with the intention of donating it. I am so proud of her and her generosity.
When we went to get her hair cut she didn’t realize that her hair would be so short afterwards, but she was completely okay with it because her hair is going to a good place and will help another child who isn’t able to grow their hair. In turn, I also cut my hair very short along with her.
Did you know that an estimated 80% of all hair donations come from children wishing to help other children? This is absolutely amazing!
Locks of Love is an organization that collects hair to make customized hairpieces for financially disadvantaged children who have lost their hair for one reason or another.
The Locks of Love mission “is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children.”
Children how have lost their hair due to long-term medical issues not only lose their hair; they suffer from a loss of self esteem. Children can be cruel, especially when someone isn’t ‘normal’. Locks of Love helps children regain a sense of self, and a more normal life.
Each hairpiece is created specifically for a special child in need. The hairpieces aren’t like wigs that are sold in retail locations. Instead, these hairpieces form a vacuum seal on the wearer’s head that can only be broken by the wearer, so the child can play on the playground, swim, and shower with the hairpiece on without having to worry about it falling off or another child pulling it off.
There are a few requirements to donate hair to Locks of Love:
Acceptable hair donations:
- Must be at least 10 inches (no maximum length)
- Colored or permed hair
- Layered hair, as long as the longest layer is 10 inches
- Hair cut a long time ago as long as it has been stored in a braid or ponytail
- Curly hair – it can be pulled straight to be measured
- Gray hair – it’s not used for the wigs, but it can be sold to offset operating costs
Unfortunately, they can’t accept hair donations of the following:
- Bleached hair
- Swept up hair from the floor
- Hair that is shaved off that is not in a pony tail or braid
- Hair extensions
- Synthetic hair
There are several causes of hair loss for children, including many forms of cancer, Alopecia, Ectoderma Dysplasia-A, Loose Anagen Syndrom-An, Trichotillomania, and trauma suffered from accidents, dog attacks, and burns. No matter the reason, there are so many children who are in need of specialty hairpieces to make them feel better about themselves, especially through rough medical issues. If you are able to, please consider donating your hair to Locks of Love to help make a child’s life a bit better.
