I found the article Workplace bullying affects witnesses too to be an interesting article. You wouldn’t normally think about bullying in the workplace, but it can be prevalent in certain organizations. As with any type of harassment, even sexual harassment, bullying can affect not only the person being bullied, but those around that person. Bullying decreases employee morale, increases employee turnover, decreases employee production, and mentally and physically hurts the employee. It has been shown in many, many studies that a person can become physically ill due to increased stress, and the stress caused by being bullied is no exception.
I have been fortunate enough to have never been bullied; however, I have known many who have. First things first, don’t allow bullying to affect you. Step up and help upper management stop the individual doing the bullying by letting them know what’s going on. Not only are you helping yourself, but you’re also helping anyone else in your office that is being bullied by that person.
Have you ever been the victim of a bully at work? If so, how did you handle the situation?
