What Can You Do To Protect Your Business From Counterfeit Operations?

In What You Need To Know About Small Business on October 4, 2019 at 9:07 am

Protecting your business from counterfeit operations should be a main concern of yours if you’ve come up with a product idea that people are going to want to copy. Even if you don’t think that people will want to copy your product, it’s always worth staying aware so you can keep your business safe. You just never know! Every year, counterfeit goods cost the global economy $350 billion in sales. Here, we’re going to talk about what you can do to protect your business from counterfeit operations.

Make Sure You Register Your Brand

When you’ve got your business plan and your product in place, you need to make sure you register your brand. This means trademarking and federal registration. However, that’s just the first step. In the digital age, copycats can be clever, and they will likely try to make money from your brand online. So, what else can you do to make sure your brand is safe?

  • Buy all web domains that are related to your business, brand, and products so your customers don’t accidentally buy from a copycat site. Domains don’t cost a lot and it’s easy to set up redirects to take them to your site.
  • Make sure you reserve your name on all social channels. Of course, this should be paired with having an active presence on social media! This will help protect your intellectual property rights, even if you don’t plan on using all channels right away.

Monitor The Web

Once you’ve taken the steps we’ve outlined above, you can now monitor the web and make sure there aren’t any fakes and copycats. When looking for people who may knock off your products, look on sites like Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and even Facebook. Figure out how to report a counterfeit on facebook so you know what to do should you find one on there. Being active on social media means being able to check whether anybody is advertising the sale of fake products, too. There’s even counterfeit technology that you can use to make your life easier.

Turn Your Customers Into Experts

When you share as much information as possible with your audience, they’ll know how to spot fakes and knock offs and why they should avoid them. If they aren’t sue, they might just think they’re getting a good deal! Share product guidelines on your site so your customers can identify the real deal, and make sure your customers have a way to report counterfeits to you, too. You may then reward them with a note or gift.

You might believe that attempting to save your business from counterfeits is futile, but it’s very valuable in the long run. If you’re vigilant online and you take the steps laid out here, your customers will know that the only place to get this product to an acceptable standard is from you.
