Every business uses software in some form or another to carry out their day-to-day tasks. It doesn’t matter what type of operation you’re running – that software often carries a hefty price tag. It has the ability to drain your finances without you realizing it, but you’ll continue to pay over the odds due to its importance. There are some really simple ways of cutting down your software costs, though. Let’s look at a few of them now.

Open Source

Open source software is the type of software that anyone can download, modify and tinker to their heart’s content. Because of this, you’ll find that open source software is free for use, and there are some great choices out there. If your business isn’t so desperate for its 50th Microsoft Word license, why not use Apache OpenOffice? By browsing online, you’ll find all sorts of open source alternatives to some of the most expensive programs out there.

Entitlements

Free software is all well and good when you can get by with it, but that isn’t always possible. So, here’s another thing to look out for. Are you entitled to any software bundles that you aren’t making use of? For example, accountancy services might provide you with Sage access for a year. Real estate franchises might benefit from low-cost entitlements like CRM software, too. If you’re being given access to software and letting it go to waste, you’re throwing opportunities down the drain.

Freemium/Shareware

Freemium software allows you to be given access to certain elements without ever needing to pay. For example, AVG’s free offering provides limited antivirus support, but that’s more than enough for some companies! They do this in the hope that you’ll pay down the line, but it’s never forced upon you. Shareware often does try to force it upon you by putting timers on its trials. However, you’ll often be given 30 days to try all of the software’s features in advance of this.

Recycle Software Licenses

This requires the ability to be proactive. There are probably hundreds of laptops in use at your business, and they’re all packed with software. How many of those programs aren’t being used anymore? By recycling the licenses and keeping a detailed track of them, you can reuse them in the future. It saves the need for any extra spending on your part, potentially saving thousands through good organization.

Web Apps

In recent years, web apps have become much more common. Microsoft introduced Office Web Apps (now called Office Online), and Google did the same with Google Docs. Those are just two examples of thousands that are out there. Some require payment – some don’t. You’ll find that there are a lot of good, free options for certain tasks if you look around.

Keep in mind that torrenting software to keep it free is never a good idea. It’s a form of stealing, it could carry viruses, and it could put your business in serious jeopardy. No matter how tempting it might be, don’t stoop to this level.
